Training: Reporting Race and Religion
Learn how to report sensitive stories on race, religion, and ethnicity with accuracy and nuance. The Religion Media Centre, in partnership with reporter Amardeep Bassey, offers a masterclass covering demographics, avoiding misrepresentation, and finding credible voices.
What's On
The attack on Israel, the war on Gaza, the coronation, assisted dying, and the riots which followed the Southport stabbings. These are just some of the past year’s big stories with race and religion at their core. Reporting on these issues is a sensitive matter and many journalists may feel they lack the confidence or knowledge to report on communities, cultures and religions unfamiliar to them, leaving minorities feeling ignored or misrepresented. As a result, ethnic minority reporters can find themselves pigeonholed into reporting on “community” stories, regardless of their expertise or interests.
To ensure journalists have the tools they need to tackle these stories with nuance and sensitivity, the Religion Media Centre has teamed up with experienced reporter Amardeep Bassey to produce a masterclass on reporting race and religion. It outlines best practice when reporting on race, religion and ethnicity and includes the following topics:
- Demographics: knowledge of religion, organisations, beliefs and practices
- Skills: accuracy and avoiding misrepresentation
- Pitfalls: headlines and use of pictures
- Comment: how to find representative leaders giving credible comment
