Faith organisations are calling for an extension of the £20 benefits uplift for people struggling financially; and they warn that volunteers offering food and essential services are exhausted as need multiplies.
Their pleas were heard in a Religion Media Centre zoom briefing, where the scale of the need was described in stark reality and the solutions widely shared. Ruth Peacock hosted and guests included:
- Paul Morrison, Policy Adviser for the Joint Public Issues Team of free churches in Britain
- Niall Cooper, Director at Church Action on Poverty
- Venerable Dr Rosemarie Mallett, the Archdeacon of Croydon
- Harmeet Singh Gill, General Secretary of the gurdwara in west London
- Laura Marks, who set up ‘Mitzvah Day’
- Fadi Itani, CEO Muslim Charities Forum
- Abdullah Rehman from the Bahu Trust
