Briefing: The Ethics of Public Finance

It’s assumed that the market and banks are ethically and morally neutral, but they’re not, according to panellists at this Religion Media Centre briefing. They discussed the ethical position underpinning the finance industry to improve society, to make people better off – and they concluded that this goal is not working. The ethics on display in the current UK financial turmoil are negative – lack of justice, less love for the neighbour, personal independence at the expense of communities, decisions without evidence and a democratic deficit.
