Immigration, patriotism and nationalism have all played a part in the recent surge of Union Jacks and St George’s Cross flags on lamposts, buildings and streets across Britain. But the mood has led to attacks on British Muslims, amid a tendency to conflate Islam, immigration, asylum seekers and small-boat crossings. This Sunday, 7 September, Pope Leo XIV will canonise Carlo Acutis at a ceremony at St Peter’s Basilica. The British-born teenager, who died aged 15, has been called the first millennial saint and God’s Influencer. Read Catherine Pepinster’s explainer here
US Jesuit priest and LGBTQ campaigner, James Martin, met Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican and said “Pope Leo has the same openness to LGBTQ issues as Pope Francis had. He made clear that he wants everyone to feel welcome”. Fr Martin is Editor at Large at The America magazine and their report is here.
A professor at The Catholic University of America, has received a $3.89 million grant from the John Templeton Foundation for a study of beauty. The university says the research will span literature, neuroscience, philosophy, psychology, and sociology to better understand how experiences of beauty may contribute to creating a sense of meaning and transcendence.
