Event: Media, Faith & Human Rights

The Religion Media Centre is thrilled to announce a special event for media professionals who cover community news, international affairs, human rights or religion.

Join us on 3rd November 2022 at UKTV Studios for a development session delivered in conjunction with the UN’s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, with guest speakers including the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, Professor Dr Nazila Ghanea.

We have limited spaces available for this unique evening of training and development session, whch includes elements of the United Nations’ “Faith for Rights” project, which seeks to understand the opportunities and tensions between human rights and religion & belief, and how they affect the reporting of religion in the media.

The programme for the evening:

1700: Welcome with Rabbi Alex Goldberg, Faith for Rights Academy, and Ruth Peacock from the Religion Media Centre

1705: Introduction: David Burrowes, the Prime Minister’s Deputy Special Envoy on Freedom of Religion or Belief

1710: Interview with the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, Professor Dr Nazila Ghanea, followed by Q&A

1750Break

1800: A short introduction to the UN’s programme Faith for Rights and what it seeks to achieve, where it has been rolled out and initial response

1830: Reporting on human rights from the media’s perspective – a conversation with journalists Armadeep Bassey, Emily Buchanan and Julia Bicknell

1920Break

1930: Workshops led by Dr Thiago Alves Pinto, (Oxford University and panel member of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights); and Sughra Ahmed, (Director of Education at the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organisation, Yale). Participants will review the role of the media in reporting religion, societal conflict, civil and political rights, gender rights and community cohesion.

2040: Closing reflections

Facilitators include UN consultants on religion and belief and human rights experts. A Faith for Rights Certificate will be presented.

We would be delighted if you could join us for this important discussion. There is no charge to participants for attendance. We ask only that people arrange to cover their own travel costs to and from the venue and give their assurance that they will turn up on the day. Light snacks and drinks will be available.
